Malay Weddings... the challenge for a wedding photographer... part I

Malay wedding actually consists of 'Akad Nikah' and 'Persandingan' events. These events may take 2 separate days or on the same day. From my experience in Terengganu and Kelantan, the 'akad nikah's event occurs a day before the 'Persandingan's event. But it is all depends to the days the family choose to have the events, if its normally fall on a school holiday, then, it may take 2 separate days but if on short holiday like a weekend plus any public holiday, they prefer to have it on the same day.

The significant of whether to have the events on the same day or 2 separate days are when taking into consideration of hiring a photographer. If the events occur on the same day, the photographer would only present on that particular day... but if it takes different days, then the photographer has to travel twice. Many photography packages would charge an extra cost for traveling cost if they have to be at the location twice. And of course, unless, they are provided a place to stay nearby...

OK... so, what happen on the 'akad nikah's event?

Most of the time, the event occurs at a mosque nearby the bride's house. Well, of course it is more 'berkat' to get married at the mosque, however.

And to me, this event is the most challenging to get the job done. Why is that? Normally, mostly... inside the mosque, the light is always not adequate. This is due to to the wide space in the mosque and the ceiling is normally more than 15 feet above. Well, the issue is - a photographer MUST USE SPEED-LIGHT or FLASH!!! Unless, they are using D700 or D3/D3x (Nikon) which they can use ISO up to 1800 or more (plus they are full-frame), and still can get appropriate shutter speed to get sharp photographs. However, I'm sure they still prefer to use speed-light to make sure they have enough exposure of the objects.

Now when a flash or speed-light is needed, there is another issue - NO SUITABLE PLACE TO BOUNCE THE LIGHT!!!... And what would happen? We need to use 'fill-in' or target the speed light towards the object directly and REALLY CAREFULLY!!! (with full consciousness)

Well, I don't know what to say... It's really an awesome book. Full of tips and step by step guide on how to have a picture with great lighting effects and most of them are using 'ambient' lights...

Hmm...according to the  Amazon.com, I should receive the book after 4 - 5 weeks but , I received it only in 10 days... which is great!!! And there's no Sales Duty or Import Duty charges to pay... hmm...

Wedding Photography : The Challenge...

I remember the first time I followed a friend of mine as his back-up photographer, at a wedding event, I was so nervous. First, because of the official role as a photographer of a wedding events (hired), even though, I was just a back-up. Second, I was too overwhelmed by the idea of trying to get the best shot... I mean, the right angle, the right composition and the right TIMING... Yes, I was thinking that I was hired, but what if I missed the important event... or what if the composition or angle of the capture was not good enough. And the most important thing is, what if the client will not satisfy with my pictures...

Hahahahaa... wow, I attended so many wedding events before, my brother's wedding, my cousin's wedding and many of my close friends' wedding, and I brought along my camera and snaps all the pictures I wanted, but not as a HIRED photographer. I don't remember feeling anything and I rally had fun taking pictures, but on that paticular event, I was extremely nervous... hahahaha...

That is a different of being a HIRED photographer and NON-HIRED photographer. It was a real challenge.

It was when you want to make sure the exposure was right, especially when you want the object focused and others out of focused (depth of field), it was when you want to make sure, the light from your speedlight cover the object just nice, so the image come out well-exposed and so many thing to consider but time doesn't wait for you. The events can't be stopped for you to get the right snap...

But of course, unless you are using FULL AUTOMATIC MODE!!!

However, one thing about being a wedding photographer, overcoming the challenge and being able to have great pictures of the events and the clients are satisfied with your presentation... you are A PHOTOGRAPHER... So, if you are still struggling with your camera, while shooting the wedding events... be a back-up photographer until you are as good as the OP!... Its THE TRAINING GROUND! The First Level of a BOOT-CAMP of a wedding photographer...

p.s. And if you are a wedding photographer, and using a 'full automatic mode', you might want to consider of being hired...

An Attempt To Preserve Old Photos : Photoshop retouching

As I was looking for my Digital Camera magazines, I noticed an album from my school days. I took it off the shelves and flip through page by page. Hahahaha... it's surely one hell of a memory. But most of the photos had turned yellowish and faded. They were captured way back in 1987 when I was in secondary school hohoho...

It was just then, I thought I could do something to the photos using Photoshop. So I scanned a few to give a try, using my HP scanner, set to 300 resolution. It took me nearly one hour to tweak here and there to come out with at least... "at least" better then previous...

Professional Wedding Photographer ???

Notice the photo showing me in action(capturing the newly-wed under the tree near the main road), in my previous post? That was almost a year and a half ago... And that was the last job I involved in... even though, as an assistant photog.

Why I am here...

Last weekend, I was insisted by my mother-in-law to be part of the "Rombongan Keluarga Lelaki" for an engagement session... Well, of course I had to be part of the team, since it's my brother-in-law who was getting engaged... :)

However, I have also had to attend the wedding event of my cousin (on my wife's side) in the morning. Arrived at the mosque where the event was to be held, my uncle handed me his Nikon D70s complete with SB800 with a 18-70mm, and asked me to capture the events... Hahahaha... It had been a long time since the last time I hold a dslr. Well, since I was not that familiar with D70s, I was rather hesitated to the request. But, considering my pride as a 'used to be' a wedding photographer(semi-pro) I accepted.

I took a few minutes going into the MENU items in D70s and changed the settings to my needs (which was not far different from the D80 and D90 that i was using last time), set the SB800 to manual mode (my uncle use 4 batteries instead of 5, and it was the TESCO batteries 'sigh')..., I took the test shots...

I kind of irritated with it small LCD viewer compared to D80's but I managed to get a reasonable shots, with a minor disadvantage of the 18-70mm lens, which was not wide enough to get good composition (Hell...! the unauthorized photographers were like a swarm of bees... feel sad for the OP of the event, huhuhu...)

When the event started, I get into action... And, wooo.... it felt good. I really missed it.

Well, I just realized that its really is my passion. I love taking pictures! I love the challenges! I love the moments in wedding events... It opens to many creative captures... (sigh).

Yes... I don't have my equipments anymore... thats why...

So, the whole day, I was back in action, but with the D70s and i dont even have the chance to see my captured images!!!

Announcement!!! I am a wedding photographer in the making ...

Yup...! It's me... (who?) Hmm... I'd like to remain anonymous for the time being..hehehe.

Custom Album or Storybook Album - The Trend...

And yesssss... of course, when we mention 'wedding photography'... what would come in mind is The Custom Album or Storybook Album! (And to my surprise, many of those claimed 'professional' or 'semi-pro' wedding photographers still confuse with the right word for 'custom'... mmm... too bad). When I was first involved in capturing Big Moments on wedding days... (as an assistant), the custom album was a 12" x 8" 20 pages with the 8RW prints on each page album with black leather hard cover and there's a window frame on the cover. Now, the album has been known as classic custom album since a new glamorous Storybook Album has taken over its popularity...

Normally these types of album cost up to RM1,000 or more (plus the professional service). However, there are still some photographers out there who are still offering these albums for less than RM1K. Hmm... used to hear a few 'otai's get really furious about this. But what to do... :)

As for me, when you are talented and creative, plus there's a trademark in your design, which means "ITS YOUR DESIGNS"... and clients love your designs... they won't mind paying you how much you would ask from them (as long as it is still within a reasonable price). I sometimes also heard some clients made statements like "The price is too cheap, may be his designs are not to the expectations... and I think your designs are better in a way... (with a smile)"...

Well, folks! Go for Custom Album or Storybook Album... its worth all the money you allocated for it! (provide that you really like your photographer's designs).

Wedding Events and Moments Captured... such an amazing talents!!!

Hello and welcome to my (newkid) wedding photography services blog. Yeah!!! I am a photography enthusiast and love how moments in life are captured into still images to be viewed later on, especially for big events such as Wedding Day!!!... However, me myself is not really a wedding photographer (full-time) coz I am more into browsing the internet most of the time - 12 hours a day!

So, 'travelling' all over the websites on just about anything that interest me, I found that I have been spending a lot of time looking and admiring wedding events and moments captured by quite a large number of wedding photographers local and international level. I have to say some of the prominent names in this field are KidChan, Saiful Nang (Candid Syndrome), Hasnuddin and many more... (hmm.. and they don't even know me...hehehe)

Looking back 15 or more years ago, the presentation of the wedding events captured was far different from nowadays. It has been such a tremendous and amazing way of capturing the moments in wedding photography field at present. To me, it shows such a great improvements or should I say a 'revolution' in wedding photography.

Well, to photographers especially wedding photographers, and especially again, in Malaysia..., keep up the good work and strive more to bring this industry to the highest level and gain the most of its popularity! What a talent! : )
